ANCC Implements Changes to Nurse Specialty Credentialing

Posted over 4 years ago

Dear Nursing Colleagues,

Hawaiʻi - American Nurses Association would like to pass on crucial information about the re-naming of nursing credentials per ANCC.

Recently, the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Commission on Board Certification (COC) evaluated numerous requests to provide distinction and clarity to the credential held by nurses certified by ANCC.  Accordingly, the COC made the determination that nurses holding the following specialty certifications would be issued the updated credentials as listed below:

ANCC Specialty

New Credential

Ambulatory Care Nursing

AMB-BC™

Cardiac Vascular Nursing

CV-BC™

Gerontological Nursing

GERO-BC™

Medical Surgical Nursing

MEDSURG-BC™

Nursing Case Management

CMGT-BC™

Pain Management Nursing

PMGT-BC™

Pediatric Nursing

PED-BC™

Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing

PMH-BC™

Informatics Nursing*

RN-BC®

™ & ® are not required when displaying credentials

*The Informatics Nursing credential shall remain RN-BC as we continue to examine options.

The COC believes that these updated credentialing acronyms better reflect the unique specialty practice areas of board certification and serve as distinguished markers of specialty competence.

The COC also realizes that changes in the credentialing acronyms will require nurses to make modifications to signature lines, business cards, and similar professional documents.  These changes can be accomplished over time and should not be an undue burden.

You may begin using these updated credentials on your professional documents and in your professional titles immediately.  You will receive a revised certification wall certificate listing your new credential, at the time of your next certification renewal.  You may print an updated wallet card by visiting www.nursingworld.org and logging into “my account.”

The ANCC Certification Program is here to answer your questions and to guide you through the process and transition. For additional assistance related to your individual concerns, please contact us at 1.800.284.2378 or certification@ana.org.
