Expands the Department of Education's authority to allow more trained staff to volunteer to assist students with the administration of medication.

Topic: HI American Nurses Association with  HI Moms Demand Action.  Mar 10, 2025 01:00 PM Hawaii. Meeting objectives: 1. Discuss potential HI-ANA Op-Ed/Letter to the Editor on gun violence prevention, 2. Discuss other potential opportunities for collaboration.

UPDATE 3/11/25: OpEd piece by Kara Gormont submitted to HNL newspaper & being edited 3/16/25 for publication. 

HB893: assault weapons crossed over 3/4/25 (may absorb SB401 50 caliber bill)

 HB125: crossed over 3/4/25.

12. Hawai’i-ANA  Strategic Plan for Advocacy Committee

Needs to be reviewed by committee following report from HI-ANA SP 2025 group via Elizabeth (ED), and updated.


Denise will review the SP with Elizabeth for use by the committees.

Kathleen: In the future neighbor island students come to Oahu for legislative activities.

Denise: refers Kathleen to the UH Foundation for funds for UHMC students.

  1. HI-ANA Advocacy Committee Policy DRAFT:  The plan is for this committee to review it prior to sending to Katie for her committee to review.

HB1244: House Committees on Health and Labor

Date and Time: Wednesday, February 5, 2025 at 9:00 a.m. HI-ANA submitted testimony & Linda spoke @ 2 hour hearing ended with the Chair Takayama (House Committee on Health) “deferred” the bill, effectively killing it. 

HB 1244: 2/6/25 We are disappointed with this outcome and so far no senate committee hearing is scheduled.

Good coalition of nurse orgs. 

Alison & Denise  draft a letter to each committee member regarding the outcome of the HB1244 to F/U for education for next year.

  • work w other orgs: HNA-OPEIU, HSCN, Kaiser union, etc.
  • send letters thanking legislators and rebutting their remarks prn
  • ask for a meeting after leg is done
    • to plan for next year
    • to garner support
    • to educate them on the issues
    • to build on where we are at

Will move ahead with this as time permits to be completed by May 31/25.  

HI-ANA Bylaws & Policy Committee agreed on 2/26/25 to hold on Advocacy policy until end of legislation session to give Advocacy Committee time to revise the current draft.
